Modern Sailing School & Club is the premier sailing school on the West Coast. We have been teaching adults how to sail on the San Francisco Bay and internationally since 1983. Our personable and experienced professionals provide the highest level of instruction on the San Francisco Bay and California coast. Courses and specialty clinics are taught year-round, during the week and on the weekend.

Our sailing school is certified by the ASA (American Sailing Association) and is an authorized Coast Guard Licensing Facility. Our Yacht Management Services ensure that our fleet is professionally maintained. Modern Sailing also offers and organizes Skippered Charters, Corporate Regatta team building events, Global Destinations international adventure trips, and an active Recreational Race Program.

Need a job and love to sail? Join the friendly and supportive Modern Sailing community as one of our valued team members! Our staff enjoys leisure sails together, employee celebrations and BBQs, discounts on marine supplies and vendors, complimentary ASA courses, sailing clinics, and other educational opportunities. We are currently hiring Customer Service Representatives, Fleet Service Specialists, and ASA Instructors.

Do you have your captain's license, or are you qualified to become licensed? Complete your ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics at Modern Sailing and join our team of highly respected professionals! Our instructors receive 100% tuition reimbursement for each clinic after teaching their first course at that level (e.g., reimbursed for ASA 201 after teaching one complete ASA 101 course).

If you don't have your Captain's License yet, we host USCG Captain's License courses twice a year, in the spring and in the fall - right around the same time as our ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics. Learn more about USCG Captain's License Courses at Modern Sailing.

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

  • John Kipping

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

  • John Kratochvil, Oregon

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

  • Jessica Zittere, Member

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

  • Mike, Santa Rosa, California

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.
