Opening Day on the Bay 2025: Guide to the Launch of Sailing Season

Opening Day on the Bay is Sunday, April 27, 2025

March teases us with a taste of sailing season's imminent arrival. While a true salt might might have a sixth sense for Mother Nature's cues, the rest of us are counting down the calendar days. In San Francisco, that moment is marked by the iconic Opening Day on the Bay, a tradition as iconic as the Golden Gate Bridge itself. This comprehensive guide will chart your course through the day's events, from the Corinthian Yacht Club's 'Blessing of the Fleet' to the dazzling boat parade and Modern Sailing Club's post-parade Member Mixer celebration

What is "Opening Day on the Bay?"

Organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association for 108 years, this annual celebration has marked the official kick-off of the Bay Area's sailing season. Remarkably, since PICYA took stewardship in 1917, this cherished tradition has only been interrupted by the necessities of World War II and the global pandemic of 2020, which highlights its enduring significance.

This year, on Sunday, April 27th, the annual maritime celebration's theme is "Generations on the Bay." Participants are invited to get creative and decorate boats and crew according to your own interpretation. Honoring the vivid historical generations of the San Francisco Bay, PICYA highlights the spectrum of possibilities, "from the Gold Rush Era & Building of the Golden Gate Bridge to the Summer of Love, Music Mecca, the GoGo 90's, Golden Decade of Sports and Tech Explosion - Pick Your Favorite "Generation" to Represent!" Modern Sailing's Club Sail boats will be decorated with flags, and we encourage our charter members and skippers to unleash your creativity.

3 Ways To Participate:

1 - Opening Day Club Sails

Join the boat parade aboard one of our Club Sail vessels and embark on the "blessing of the fleet" in Racoon Strait, hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club. Whether you choose to embark on a Club Sail from Sausalito aboard Survivor, Beneteau 38' or from Berkeley on the 42' Bavaria, Moon Dance, you'll be surrounded by members embracing the spirit of the event. Skippered by one of our MSC Club Members, our social club sails are an excellent way to make new friends and practice sailing the San Francisco Bay.

2- Charter a Boat on Opening Day

Charter a boat from our fleet of sportboats, premium sportboats, cruising monohulls and catamarans at either MSC Berkeley or MSC Sausalito and showcase your skills and creativity to join the parade. Remember, decorating your charter to the theme could earn you prestigious COTY points and bragging rights for the season. (Remember to register your charter by April 23rd, 2025). If you are not a certified skipper, MSC Members can put out call on our distribution Crew List. Visit this page for information on joining the crewlist.

3 - Join our Après Sail & Member Mixer| Post Opening Day Celebration

Join Modern Sailing Sausalito for a special Member Mixer from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Enjoy live music, fine wine, craft beer, and a locally catered spread. RSVP is recommended to ensure we keep the refreshments flowing. MSC Berkeley will host après sail from 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM with refreshments. Whether you're fresh off a class, wrapping up a charter, or just looking for a great time, come as you are and celebrate with us! RSVP today.

Make sure to snap photos of your decorated skippers, crew and boats! Send them to angel@modernsailing.com to be featured on our social media channels and our website.

It has been wonderful sailing with MSC over the years. Please extend my thanks to the owners, management, and staff for unrequited professionalism and high standards in a charter fleet. I have sailed with several in my years and none nearly hold a candle to the quality of business and staff at Modern Sailing.

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.
