WIND & WOMEN - Women's Sailing Courses

Introducing Wind & Women

Are you or someone you know interested in learning to sail with an all-women crew? Join Wind & Women - Modern's women's sailing program! While we believe that anyone can learn from any of our excellent instructors, we are eager to create a supportive and encouraging program in which women support women in achieving their sailing goals.

Women Take the Helm

The legacy of women in sailing dates back to the 1700s with infamous pirates Anna Bonney and Hannah Reed aboard the pirate sloop Revenge. Throughout history, women have been making their mark in the sailing community, setting circumnavigation records, leading all-female race teams and making it clear that the sea is a big enough challenge for both men and women. From Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, the first woman to circumnavigate the world, to Laura Dekker - the youngest, and Jeanne Socrates - the oldest, female sailors have been adding their finesse to sailing for centuries. (To read more about cool women sailors, see Women aboard: the most famous female sailors of all time.)

Women Learning to Sail on San Francisco Bay

Wind & Women is focused on building this legacy and growing the community of female sailors who make the Bay Area their home. Taught by Captains Kira Maixner, Laura ParentKatie Cornetta, Andrea Geisinger, Mindy Oppenheim, and several others, courses accommodate all skill levels and provide an inclusive and open atmosphere for learning how to sail safely and confidently. Take the helm, hone your skills, and skipper like a pro - join Wind & Women and sign up for one of our American Sailing Association courses!

There are three ways to sign up for Wind & Women courses - call (415) 331-8250, email us, or check the Schedule and enroll online. Pricing for Wind & Women courses is the same as for co-ed courses.

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!
