Level 2 - Development Race Teams

Modern Sailing's Spring Development Race Teams

Ready to move beyond the basics and build deep team synergy by focusing on a key racing role? Our Development Race Teams (formerly Club Race Teams) are your pathway to Level 2 of our progressive racing program. Join a dedicated crew on a high-performance one-design yacht and commit to a series of five races, plus one practice session—six days of immersive on-water experience. This focused series builds crucial familiarity with your role, your teammates, and the boat, setting you up for significant advancement in competitive racing.

Before and/or after each race, the coach will lead the crew through racing practice, time permitting. After the race, the team will dock at Modern Sailing, put the boat away, and then drive to either the Berkeley Yacht Club (Team Mymble and Team Resolute) or Sausalito Yacht Club (Team Chao Pescao and Team Fly) to join the post-race social and results celebration.

Practice sessions are included in the cost of enrollment. These are mandatory and will be scheduled as part of your overall enrollment commitment. All racers are expected to attend.

Note: Coaches and boats may be substituted on an as-needed basis.

MSC Development Race Teams FAQs

Q: How does the Level 2 Development Race Team format differ from the Level 1 Introduction Race Teams?

A. Our Level 1 Race Teams are perfect for graduates of our Racing Clinic.  In the Introduction Race Teams you'll rotate through all crew positions during each race in the series, giving you hands-on experience and a well-rounded understanding of racing fundamentals.  For experienced racers, Level 2 Race Teams offer a platform to hone individual skills and develop the teamwork necessary to become a highly competitive racing team.  Modern Sailing instructors provide coaching at both levels, but Level 2 represents a higher level of competition and includes participation in events like the Midwinters.

Q. What if I have race experience outside of Modern Sailing’s Racing Program?

A. Racing experience outside Modern’s Racing Program can be used to meet the prerequisites of the Race Team. We ask that you submit a sailing resume detailing the experience. Please contact us to learn more about this.

Q: What is the difference between Level 2 Development Race Teams and the Level 3 Performance Team?

A: Development Team Races are for a specific series, typically casual races at the local yacht clubs. Consider this the intermediate tier of our Racing Program. Level 1 Introductiong Racing is the entry-level tier, and our Performance Racing Program will be the top tier of our Racing Program. Top tier racing involves a mix of Race Instructor-led practice sessions and class-level races (such as in the Rolex Big Boat Series).

Q: Can I sign up for only one or some of the races in a Development Race Team series?

A: No, this enrollment is like a course or a multi-day clinic. You will sign up for every race in the series. If you know in advance you will need to miss up to one race in the series, you can still enroll. If you need to miss more than one race, please let our office team know at sign-up to see what options you may have to still join.

Q: Will I be assigned a specific role in the team for the whole series?

A: Roles will be assigned during the pre-race session. Team members will be encouraged to fill the same role through the series to develop strong proficiency in the specific role.

Q: Are MSC Development Race Teams for Modern Sailing club members only?

A: No, Development Race Teams are open to Modern Sailing club members and non members. Learn about the many benefits of club membership.

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

  • Steve Hood, Basic Coastal Cruising

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!
