Philip Strause | Modern Sailing

Philip Strause

Instructor, Fleet Onboarding Coordinator

Philip got hooked on sailing after a family trip to the British Virgin Islands just before college. He joined as crew on a J/105 that campaigned throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2013, Philip embarked on a solo sailing adventure, navigating his 1966 Bristol 27 from Annapolis, Maryland to Key West, Florida. After relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2015, he immersed himself in the local sailing scene, racing out of Berkeley Yacht Club.

Philip joined OCSC Sailing that same year where he honed his management skills as Club Manager, overseeing corporate events, flotillas, and adventure travel. He subsequently served as General Manager at Berkeley Yacht Club, then moved across the marina in 2021 as the General Manager of Inspire Sailing, bringing his extensive experience to each role. In 2022, Philip transferred to Modern Sailing Sausalito as General Manager and earned his USCG Captains license.

Currently, Philip continues to contribute to the sailing community as a valued member of the Modern Sailing team. He assists with fleet onboarding and shares his expertise as an exceptional sailing instructor.

Beyond his professional endeavors, he remains an active sailor. He and his wife Moni actively race Wolpertinger, a 1976 Santa Cruz 27, and frequently crews aboard Sea Star, a Cal 39.

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
