Private Sailing Lessons and Instruction in the Bay Area

Modern Sailing gives students the choice of learning to sail either in a group course or on a private basis.

On a private basis, we'll be happy to build a custom program to meet your personal sailing objectives. You can choose a time frame that fits your schedule. Whether your goal is to get certified, build your sailing resume for chartering, or simply learn new skills to make sailing more enjoyable, Modern Sailing can help you reach these goals. You'll receive expert instruction from one of our proven USCG Licensed Captains and aboard the yacht size of your choice, from 24 to 42 feet.

Are you looking for four or more hours of one-on-one instruction? A Private Lesson is for you! These minimum 4 hour sessions are ideal for one to two students who are looking to focus on specific techniques such as docking, close-quarters maneuvering, points of sail, tacking, jibing and heaving-to. Private lessons are a great option for sailors returning to the sport to brush the rust off before a bareboat skills checkout.

Private and Custom Certification Courses and Expeditions

Looking to earn ASA Certifications, but our Schedule of courses doesn't quite mesh with yours? Consider a Custom ASA Course. Custom Courses can be scheduled to accommodate your needs and are a fun way to learn a new skill with your closest crew – family members or friends. We offer a range of private instruction from ASA 101 through ASA 106, including all of our in-house Sailing Clinics and even our Locals Expeditions to the Farallones, Half Moon Bay, and Drakes Bay.

Private Lessons on Your Own Boat

We also offer lessons and Custom ASA Courses on privately-owned vessels. Simply add Modern Sailing as additionally insured on your marine insurance policy. Your instructor will inspect your vessel prior to departure and may postpone the lesson if the vessel is found to be in an unsafe condition. For pricing, visit our Skippered Charters Pricing page.

We would be happy to work with you to design a custom program suited to your needs - email us, or give us a call at (415) 331-8250.

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.
