Are you a sailor experienced as racing crew, seeking to compete at the highest levels? The structure and criteria for Tier 3 of our Racing Program, the J/88 Performance Race Team, has been established – and we are ready for crew to sign up!
Sailing J/88 Fly in one-design fleet races, The Performance Race Team will consist of 7 crew members in the roles of:
- 1 Owner/Driver
- 4 Regular Crew
- 1 Alternate*
- 1 Race Coach
*One “Practice with Us” Alternate crew member will attend the practice sessions and will get “called up” to participate if a Regular Member of the crew cannot attend.
2024 Performance Race Team Sessions
The 2024 program will consist of the following types of sessions:
Spring Series
- 2 practice sessions (10am – 4pm)
- 4 J/88 class level race days (9am - 4pm)
Summer Series
- 2 Practice sessions (10am - 4pm)
- 4 J/88 class level race days (9am - 4pm)
Rolex Big Boat Series
- 1 practice session (10am - 4pm)
- 2 race days in the Phyllis Kleinman/Swiftsure Regatta (9am – 4pm)
- 4 race days in Rolex Big Boat Series (9am - 4pm)
All participants will be active in not only the tasks relevant to their position, but will learn and be active in advanced techniques to maximize boat speed over ground, covering topics like race strategy, on-the-water rig tuning, reading the water, and performance polars.

The Spring Series will be coached by Modern Sailing instructor and experienced racer Captain Mark Jordan.
Summer Series
- June 16 - first practice session
- June 22 - 23, J/Stop Regatta - South Beach Yacht Club
- July 6 - second practice session
- July 13 - 14, One-Design Invitational, Sausalito Yacht Club
The Summer Series will be coached by Modern Sailing instructor and experienced racer Captain Katie Cornetta.
The Rolex Big Boat session dates are TBD.
Participant Prerequisites
Spring and Summer Series
- The prerequisites for crew are a minimum of 12 days of racing experience, preferably in the Modern Sailing Racing Program.
Rolex Big Boat Series
- Participation is by Modern Sailing invitation only. Preference is given to members who have participated in the Spring and Summer Series J/88 Performance Program, or who have had frequent participation in past races with Modern Sailing.
2024 Performance Race Team Pricing
Spring Series
- Regular Crew Position = $2250 (This equates to $375/day)
- Practice with Us Alternate = $495 + $375/day of Race participation
Summer Series
- Regular Crew Position = $2250 (This equates to $375/day)
- Practice with Us Alternate = $495 + $375/day of race participation
Rolex Big Boat Series Invitational
- Regular Crew Position = $3475 (This equates to $495/day)
- Practice with Us Alternate = $2295 + $495/day of Race participation
- The Practice with Us Alternate participates in practice sessions and the Rolex Big Boat Series races.
- The Practice with Us Alternate is not on the boat for the Swiftsure event unless “called up” to replace a Regular Crew member.
Performance Race Team Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy
- To secure a crew position on the Performance Race Team, participants must pay the total pricing in full.
- If a participant cancels within 48 hours of payment, they are eligible to receive a 100% refund.
- After the initial 48 hours, if the participant cancels prior to the first day of the program, they are eligible to receive a 50% refund.
- Participants are expected to attend all sessions. Therefore, participants are not eligible for a refund if they cancel any of the races during the series or drop out once the series has begun.
- If missing more than one session, the participant’s crew position will be filled permanently.
