J/99 "Mymble" Makes a Splash with Modern Sailors

Step aboard the J/99 named Mymble through the words of Modern sailors who've experienced the thrill and finesse that this exceptional vessel offers. Geoff Love, Vincent Latour, and Jim Govert share their encounters with Mymble, painting a picture of her prowess on San Francisco Bay waters, especially in this season's variable and lighter winds.

Geoff marvels at the boat's sleek design, describing it as a playground for those seeking effortless speed and technical sophistication. This sentiment is echoed by Vincent, highlighting Mymble's responsiveness and comfort for sportboat enthusiasts. Jim's narrative chronicles a fun day sail with family and friends, navigating the Bay with ease, praising Mymble's nimble handling and impressive performance even in light airs. He also offers a couple of tips that he learned about handling Mymble along the way.

From the efficient deck layout to the allure of her pristine interior, Mymble emerges as an irresistible addition to the fleet, inviting Modern Sailing club members to experience the joy of sailing this remarkable Premium Sportboat.

"If your idea of sailing includes finessing the trim so the boat glides along, fast, and without apparent effort, then this is the boat to play on. It’s a modern technical race boat, and includes features you won’t see on most cruisers. Couple that with performance sails and you may just find your new Zen place. My only regret was I had to return the boat at the end of the day."

- Geoff Love

"Mymble is sailing extremely well in the light wind we are having. She is also very responsive. A 'must try out’ for tiller-sportboat enthusiasts. The big open cockpit makes it comfortable with 5 or even 6 sailors. Line handling is very well laid out, with even the outhaul and the cunningham leading back to the cockpit. The jib lead will be new for you but is easy to figure out. Ask fleet staff to explain it before you go or simply play with the sheets and see what it does to the shape of your jib. And hey, how often do you get to sail a brand new boat? We had a blast!"

- Vincent Latour

"I was out with Bob Fernandez and Lily Bragg, who are both club members, and my parents who went along for the ride. We sailed around in the area between Alcatraz Island and Angel Island, then went in the slot for a bit and circled Angel Island, went down toward Treasure Island and then back to Berkeley. We did all that on a light wind day because Mymble really moves through the water.

"Mymble is nimble!  Again, we had variable breeze, mostly light, but the boat zoomed along and responded quickly as the breeze shifted. New sails are easy to handle. The boat has a large mainsail so you need to watch the downwind angles - too deep and your jib will not be working very much.

"The tiller is great for handling a bigger sportboat. Very responsive and easy to tell when you are sailing well. With the tiller extension, the helm is out of the way of the boom and crew on maneuvers and that makes for an easier time for the skipper to keep an eye on the breeze and tacks. The engine works well and motoring is comfortable when necessary - but you can sail the boat even in a very light breeze.

"Interior is pretty beautiful for a race boat - still has that new boat smell!

"Watch out for that sprit! Unlike the J/105s, the bowsprit on the J/99 is fixed and so you need to keep an eye on it leaving and arriving at the dock.

"Mymble is a great addition to the fleet and exciting to sail."

- Jim Govert

Testimonials

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

  • Danny Collins

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.

  • Warren Leiden, Member

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!
