Tyler Cobbett | Modern Sailing

Tyler Cobbett

Instructor

Captain Tyler loves time on the water on any kind of craft from sail to power, canoes to kayaks. A member of Modern Sailing since 2009, Tyler has chartered most of the yachts in the Gold and Platinum fleets in Sausalito. Favorite cruises include Greece’s Ionian Islands, Canada’s North Channel, a delivery from Newport, Rhode Island to Toronto via the Erie and Oswego canals, and trips to Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel.

In 2024 he sailed as First Mate on an Oyster 655 from Bermuda to Newport, RI. The crew of four made the 660 nautical mile passage in 81 hours, reaching a distance of over 300 nautical miles from land.

Tyler raced Hobie 20s, 18s, and 16s throughout California and the Great Lakes for 20 years before concentrating on keelboats.

In March 2023, his sailing naturally evolved to teaching for Modern Sailing in both Sausalito and Berkeley. He finds students benefit from learning boathandling and rigging on sportboats, then transitioning to cruising yachts. With his background on multihulls, Tyler especially loves teaching cruising catamaran courses.

When he's not on the water, Tyler is an avid hiker, skier, and musician.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
