Modern Sailors in the 2023 Rolex Big Boat Series

September 28, 2023

Members of the Modern Sailing community have become a presence in San Francisco Bay yacht racing circles, even in the big world-caliber events like the Rolex Big Boat Series!

As announced in early September, for the first time, Modern Sailing entered J/88 Fly and a hand-selected team of racers to compete in this year's Rolex Big Boat Series. Racers were selected based on their past participation and contributions in the Modern Sailing Racing Program.

The Fly team consisted of:

  • Captain Katie Cornetta, Coach/Tactician
  • Ron Clark, Bow
  • John Erickson, Bow
  • Camille Moussette, Jib
  • Barbara Briner, Spinnaker
  • Tom Richman, Helm and Owner of Fly
  • Tim Kordas, Mainsail

Learn more about the team by reading the article that announced their participation: Modern Sailing Team to Race in the 2023 Rolex Big Boat Series

"Participating in the Rolex Big Boat Series was an opportunity to witness firsthand a rare glimpse into elite sailing strategies and tactics. The 20-minute J/88 rig tuning jam session before every race with Katie was a master class in mechanical brilliance and kinetics at an advanced level. Sign up [in racing] for the life experience, self-exploration, self-awareness, to make new connections between mind and body as they intermingle with the wind and water. Many thanks to Modern Sailing, Tom, and Katie for the monumental task of organizing and preparing a boat for such a high-level event." ~ John Erickson

The exciting J/88 Speedster Fly is now available for bareboat charter to Berkeley Premium Sportboat Fleet rated club members!

Also racing this year was Paolo Juvara aboard J/105 Chao Pescao. Paolo is a Modern Sailing student, member, Club Skipper, and owner of Chao Pescao.

Selected by Paolo, Team Chao Pescao consisted of Modern Sailing members:

  • Michael Graves, Mainsail
  • Nathanial Coghlan, Jib
  • Jenny Maybee, Pit/Tactician
  • Rebekah Moses, Mast
  • Fabrizzio Bulacia Padilla, Bow
  • Paolo Juvara, Helm and Owner

J/105 Chao Pescao is also available to bareboat charter for Modern Sailing's Berkeley Gold Fleet Rated club members!

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.

    Rolf Zingg
