Modern Members Participate in Advanced First Aid/CPR Course for Mariners

June 15, 2023

Three members of Modern Sailing, Arne Gelb, Alisa Driscoll and Elizabeth Henderson, were among those who recently participated in the no-prerequisite Advanced First Aid and CPR for Mariners course that was announced in the June 8 club newsletter. The course was offered by the Marine Medical Guides division of Backcountry Medical Guides. Founder John Taussig, a paramedic and an experienced US Coast Guard licensed captain was the lead instructor. It included approximately 4-6 hours of online slides/videos with quizzes, followed by two weekend days of skills practice and Q&A at Spaulding Marine Center, Sausalito.

Realistic scenarios with moulage (medical makeup) were run in the boatyard, on the dock, and aboard the historic restored 1885 gaff-rigged sloop, the Freda.

Besides the obvious intrinsic value for sailors and skippers, the course also satisfies the USCG first aid requirements for an OUPV or Masters license.

Another Bay Area class is planned for October 14 to 16. Watch for an announcement in the weekly newsletter.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I took ASA 101 with them recently. They have the best customer service I've ever seen! I mistyped my address when I signed up online so didn't receive the textbook. I called and the lady immediately sent me another copy! Everyone at the club is super friendly.

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
