New and Familiar Faces at MSC Become Instructors

This October, Modern Sailing congratulates nine sailors who have graduated from our fall ASA Instructor Qualification Clinics. You may recognize three Modern Sailing club members among them, and some IQC students have also become new instructors at MSC. We love to celebrate our students, members, and staff for their every achievement, but we admit there's a bit of extra thrill when they become licensed captains and instructors! Meet the three members who completed IQCs and two more who are now teaching courses at Modern Sailing.

Eric Partika

“My name is Eric and I am a lover of water and boats. I moved to San Francisco in 2008 and immediately got into sailing on the Bay. I have owned two cruising sailboats in Emeryville and Sausalito, but in 2017, I decided to leave ownership and join Modern Sailing. I am an avid fan of our club and have completed the lion’s share of my sailing training here and most recently completed the Instructor Qualification Courses to teach 101, 103, 104, 114 and 118. I enjoy sharing my love of sailing with friends, family and club members, which has lead me to becoming a sailing instructor. I have done destination sails to Catalina and overseas in the Italian Riviera and love to share experiences and lessons learned. I hope to foster other people’s interest for sailing and offer up any knowledge I have gained over the years. Hope to meet you on the water some day!”

Eric has also been a Club Skipper since July. He plans to begin teaching courses at Modern Sailing as soon as he completes his USCG Coast Guard licensing requirements. Way to go, Eric!

Jason Rock

"I grew up boating and waterskiing on the lakes of Florida. After moving to San Francisco for a job in biomedical research, I began sailing the Bay with friends and progressing through the ASA curriculum. Several of my sailing instructors were truly inspirational and I caught the sailing bug. I look forward to sharing this amazing sport with future students and helping them become capable and confident sailors. I live in Sausalito where I also keep a sailboat. I love the natural beauty and easy access to the world class sailing on San Francisco Bay."

Scott Paul

"I came to San Francisco for my second extended stay last May and have been getting out on the Bay to sharpen my sailing skills. I enjoy doing charter work and hosting friends and guests, here and in the Caribbean, but instructing can be even more rewarding in my mind. I love seeing my students light up and feel some pride and a sense of accomplishment when they first feel the wind and the lift, stick it right in the slip, or steer the perfect course. I like the sense of teamwork with students, and what a great family at Modern Sailing. Thank you for welcoming me to the team!"

Karl Bunker

Karl has been a member of Modern Sailing since 2016. It was obvious from the beginning that Karl had big plans for his sailing career. In early 2017, a few months after earning his ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing and ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising certifications, Karl completed our USCG OUPV Captains License Course. This fall, he became qualified to teach ASA 101, 103, 104, 105, and 118 and instructed his first course with Modern Sailing in early October. Welcome aboard, Karl, and a big congratulations on your achievements!

Jaskarn Johal

Jas's extensive history as a student and member of Modern Sailing goes all the way back to 2013. In September, he completed ASA 201 and 203. We applaud you, Jas!

Every aspect of Modern Sailing - training, syllabus, course materials, quality of the boats, quality of the instructors, and the very friendly and helpful staff - exceeded my expectations. Modern Sailing has a first class sailing program in an environment with challenging winds and currents. I look forward to coming back to charter a boat and certainly plan to continue my sailing training.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!
