Andrea Geisinger

Instructor

Andrea is a seasoned sailor with over 30 years of experience. Her passion for the sea began on the tranquil waters of Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Since then, she's explored the world's oceans, from the Canary Islands to the Mediterranean, the English Channel, and the North and Baltic Seas.

Andrea’s love for sailing grew after moving to the San Francisco Bay. She's cruised extensively along the West Coast, from Mexico to Alaska, and participated in the prestigious Pacific Cup race. Her most recent adventure took her to the enchanting waters of French Polynesia (to date, one of her ultimate sailing spots).

With a 200-ton Master's License, Andrea worked as captain and crew on high-speed ferries and luxury yachts on the SF Bay, as a boat captain and wilderness guide in Alaska, and brings her expertise to MSC as a highly qualified and inspiring instructor. She specializes in advanced sailing techniques, offshore navigation, and boat handling, though she still loves teaching the ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing to influence students to lay a good foundation. Her passion for sharing her knowledge and empowering others is evident in her teaching style. Andrea's favorite classes help students gain confidence and take charge at the helm—especially women looking to grow their skills.

As a crew member on an epic sailing adventure from San Francisco to Hawaii to Alaska, Andrea appeared in the pages of Latitude 38! See pages 62 to 65 of the January 2023 issue.

When Andrea isn’t teaching or captaining, you’ll find her happiest on the water, capturing stunning sailing scenes from San Francisco Bay and beyond. Follow her adventures on Instagram and join her for an unforgettable learning experience on the waves!

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.
