Development Sails

One Day, 9am - 3:30pm

Sportboat, Silver, Platinum, Catamaran, and Spinnaker Development Sails

Has it been awhile since you last sailed? Or have you recently taken ASA 101, 103, ASA 104, or ASA 114, and need more time on the water to solidify your skills? If any of the scenarios below apply to you, a Development Sail is for you!

  • You have successfully completed the course and would like more practice to increase your confidence prior to chartering.
  • You are planning to undergo a Fleet Rating Checkout (a.k.a. Evaluation Sail) and want to ensure that you are prepared to succeed.
  • Your instructor has recommended more practice in one or more skill areas in order for you to feel confident in performing a Fleet Rating checkout to complete your ASA certification.
  • Some time has passed since you've sailed or earned your certification and you would like a refresher of the essential skills.

Clinics include the practice of docking, steering, and sail trim on various points of sail, reefing, crew overboard recovery procedures, heaving-to, and standing turn maneuvers.

These are full-day sessions that run from 9:00am - 4:00pm with a break for lunch. Depending on boat size, you will have 2 to 4 classmates and an instructor on board to help you improve your skills and confidence in departing, docking, maneuvering in close quarters, crew overboard recovery, reefing underway, and more. In addition to our “general practice” Development Sails, we can also help organize Development Sails for you and your crew with targeted topics in mind — crew overboard recovery, reefing underway, and docking/marina procedures, which are all common skill areas that sailors seek extra training for.

There are four fleet sizes and a spinnaker option for you to choose from. Not sure where you fit in?  We would be happy to help you - email us or give us a call at (415) 331-8250.

  • John Kratochvil, Oregon

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

  • Mike, Santa Rosa, California

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

  • Emma & George Stubbs, Sausalito

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

  • John Boynton

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

  • Steve Hood, Basic Coastal Cruising

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.
