ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran | Modern Sailing

ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran

2 days, 9am - 4:30pm

Catamarans, otherwise known as multihulls, are quickly becoming the preferred charter boat of the Caribbean and South Pacific. As cruising vessels, multihulls offer a few advantages over monohulls - spaciousness, speed, stability, and a shallow draft that allows you to anchor closer to shore.

Our ASA 114 course will introduce you to catamaran systems and boat handling skills to give you confidence as a multihull vessel sailor.

The Cruising Catamarans Made Easy textbook is included with your purchase of this course and will be mailed to you. If you wish to pick up your textbook in person or if you sign up less than a week from the first day of your course, please contact our office. Optionally, you may purchase the Cruising Catamarans Made Easy e-book directly from the ASA. Advance study of your textbook will enhance your success in this course.

Your ASA 114, Cruising Catamaran certification qualifies sailors to charter catamarans at popular sailing destinations worldwide. Modern Sailing club members also become qualified to charter vessels in our Catamaran Fleet.

This class is a complement to your ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising certification.

There are three ways to sign up for this course - by phone (415) 331 - 8250, email, or by clicking the link below.

We just took our ASA 106 at a school in Rhode Island as we prepare for 6 months of cruising in the Caribbean. The class was great, but more than anything it made us really appreciate the quality of teaching and rigor at Modern Sailing. Even though we were the newest to sailing, the group seemed to think that we had the best fundamentals. We felt very well prepared and we see why Modern Sailing has the reputation it does.

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

The class was terrific. I know you must get many compliments about your sailing instructors...But I must tell you that Robert is outstanding. Having taught SCUBA, I really appreciate the way he is so sensitive to all on board, dealing with each so well, knowing quickly their strengths and weaknesses making each feel special and cared for.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
