The dynamic California Coast provides the perfect setting for training at an advanced level. This 7-day course combines ASA 105, Coastal Navigation and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising certifications. Discover ocean sailing and benefit from the wealth of knowledge that our instructors have gained from their own extensive cruising adventures.
Depending on weather and sea state, this course takes you beyond the Golden Gate to Drakes Bay and the Farallon Islands, then down to Half Moon Bay. You will practice night sailing and electronic piloting, learn float plan development, chart navigation, advanced sail trim, weather analysis, heavy weather techniques, emergency procedures, and more. Boat systems and troubleshooting are also covered, with an emphasis on the problem-solving skills that are essential to safe and self-sufficient coastal cruising. Course itinerary is contingent upon weather and sea state.
The Advanced Cruising & Seamanship textbook and ASA Coastal Navigation Study Kit, which includes a textbook with problem sets, DVD study guide, and a practice chart, are included with the purchase of this course and will be mailed to you. If you wish to pick up your course materials in person or if you sign up less than a week from the first day of your course, please contact our office. Optionally, you may purchase the Advanced Cruising & Seamanship e-book directly from the ASA. Advance study with your textbooks and practice chart will greatly enhance your success in this course. The Annapolis Book of Seamanship by John Rousmaniere is also recommended reading but is not required.

Note on Course Prerequisite Recency:
- If you have completed ASA 104 within the past 3 years, you are ready to enroll.
- If you completed ASA 104 more than 3 years ago, and have sailed since but not with Modern Sailing, please submit a recent Sailing Resume.
- If it has been more than 3 years since you were last on the water, you can fulfill the recency requirement by booking an ASA 111-104 Sailing Review. Please contact our team to discuss scheduling and your path to ASA 105-106.
