Chao Pescao

Gold Fleet
J/105

Chao Pescao is a J/105 in our Sausalito Gold Fleet. The J/105 by J/Boats is one of the most exciting types of boats we’ve sailed! This popular one-design model combines speed and performance with comfort and simplicity. With an overall length of 34.5 feet and a deep fin keel (draft of 6.5 feet), the J/105 is fast and responsive. Get on a beam reach, trim your sails, and blast off!

The cockpit is large, roomy, and protected by a dodger, unlike many boats of this size. Under the dodger are contemporary instrument displays with improved readability.

The mainsheet is attached to a wide traveller conveniently located just forward of the oversized wheel. As such, the helmsperson can either trim the mainsail while steering or just enjoy steering while a dedicated mainsheet trimmer keeps the boat powered up. Autopilot helps facilitate shorthanded sailing.

The roller-furling jib, slab reefing mainsail, and inboard engine add simplicity to sailing the J/105. Like the J/24, the J/105 offers the usual sail-shaping controls like the cunningham, outhaul, and adjustable backstay.

Down below, you’ll find a proper marine head, VHF radio/electronics, and long settees and v-berth with cushions. There is also a moveable table that can be set up either in the cabin or cockpit for a picnic at anchor.

Fun fact: "chao pescao" is the Chilean way of saying "see you later, alligator." It translates roughly to "goodbye, fish" in English.

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!

I would like to compliment Stan Lander for his coaching, counseling and teaching Heavy Weather Offshore Sailing. Stan was very accommodating to all of the student's interests and shared his many years of insight on handling the boat in heavy seas. I would certainly recommend Stan and this course to sheltered waters sailors. My confidence in handling a boat of this size was certainly enhanced by the experience.

Since many, many years, I had the dream to sail underneath the Golden Gate bridge. On October 14th last year, my dream became true. Thanks to our dear friend Aaron Fritz who made it possible and organized this cruise for us. With this adventure I was able to achieve one more milestone on my sailing career.

Finally on the water, it was great! Full moon made the flows even stronger and it was like sailing in a washing machine.

I did my sailing education in the English Channel, where the situation with the wind and flows is comparable to the San Francisco Bay. So I felt pretty much "at home" being on the helm in the Bay.

I hope our skipper Stan Lander enjoyed this day cruise too. We, definitely did! It was an unforgettable experience for all of us.

A very big thank you to all of you who made it possible, that my dream became reality! Also thank you for the MSC flag I got at the end of the day. It found it's place in my study, where I can see it daily.
