Spring Forward Into Sailing Season

Sunset Bridge by Capt. Scott Paul & Berkeley Marina at Sunset by Jacqueline Brevik

March 5, 2025

Daylight Savings starts on March 9, bringing some seasonal changes to chartering at Modern Sailing. The changes described below will go into effect on Monday, March 10. We've put together some ways you can brush up your skills and get ready for the official launch of San Francisco Bay sailing on Sunday, April 27 - Opening Day on the Bay.

Sunset Sails are Back!

The clocks will soon spring forward, the days will lengthen, and the Bay will be calling! Daylight Savings will usher in our Regular Sailing Season here at Modern Sailing, and with it, the promise of sun-kissed skies and weeknight adventures.

As of March 10, bareboat charter options will include Monday through Friday 4:00pm - 8:00pm Sunset Sail options at the lowest charter rates. Check out Our Charter Fleet webpage for pricing details.

Charter Options

  • Full Day (9:00 AM - 8:00 AM next day) bookings are available year-round.
  • Midweek Sunset charters are available March 10 through November 2.

Cancellation Policy

For all reservations after March 10, a notice of cancellation 72 hour prior to the start of your charter reservation or a Club Sail booking is necessary to avoid a cancellation fee (50% of the cost of the booking). This gives members a greater chance to get out on the water during peak season. During the Standard Daylight (winter) season, 24 hours of notice is required to cancel a charter reservation with no fee due to the inclement weather. Learn more about our charter policies here: Charter Policies and Definitions.

Year-round, Courses, Clinics, and Club Sails will carry on rain or shine. However, when wind speeds are forecast to be 30 or more knots sustained, conditions may be deemed unsafe and we will cancel all on-the-water operations for the day.

Multi-Day Charter Discounts Continue

Multi-day charters are discounted 10% for two consecutive days and 15% off for three or more consecutive days. Don't forget to book a BBQ or Mooring kit when you're staying overnight or two to enhance your Bay experience. Visit our article, "Choosing the Right Boat for Your Charter" to learn more.

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.

  • John Kipping

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

  • Andrew Goble, San Francisco

It has been wonderful sailing with MSC over the years. Please extend my thanks to the owners, management, and staff for unrequited professionalism and high standards in a charter fleet. I have sailed with several in my years and none nearly hold a candle to the quality of business and staff at Modern Sailing.

  • David Dolenc, Member

I love sailing in the San Francisco Bay and greatly appreciate everything that MSC has to offer, the classes, clinics, club sails, racing and charters. I enjoy our supportive sailing community and use every opportunity to spend time on the water. After obtaining the certifications from MSC I did my first charter in Croatia in 2022 with my family. It was amazing and we’re looking forward to returning soon!
