Experience the Thrill with Modern Sailing's J/105 Fleet

J/105 Chinook on the San Francisco Bay

A Testament to Performance and Simplicity

The J/105 has established itself as a cornerstone of one-design racing, and Modern Sailing is proud to offer this exceptional vessel to our Gold Fleet rated members. This isn't just a boat; it's an invitation to experience San Francisco Bay sailing at its finest. Modern Sailing proudly offers our Gold Fleet members not one, but four J/105s – two at our vibrant Berkeley base: Resolute and Nirvana, and we're days away from welcoming Chinook to join Chao Pescao in Sausalito. This abundance creates a unique opportunity for both exhilarating racing and memorable cruising explorations.

Since its 1991 debut, the J/105 has become a legend, with over 680 hulls slicing through waters worldwide. But it's on San Francisco Bay, where the wind dances and the currents challenge, that this boat truly shines. Its blend of performance and comfort makes it the perfect companion for navigating the Bay's dynamic conditions, whether you're chasing a finish line or a sunset.

Meet the Fleet:

Berkeley: Step aboard Nirvana and Resolute, our dependable and finely tuned J/105s, ready for your next Bay charter, private racing lesson, or spinnaker sail.

Sausalito: Experience the thrill of racing with Chao Pescao, and the newest member of our Sausalito fleet, Chinook, doubling your options for Bay performance sailing adventures.

Simplicity Meets Thrilling Performance:

The J/105's genius lies in its simplicity. No clutter, no unnecessary complexity – just pure sailing pleasure. Its spacious cockpit and intuitive design make it easy to handle, even with a smaller crew. And when the wind picks up, the J/105's robust build and responsive rig transform into a thrilling ride, a testament to its offshore racing pedigree, proven in events like the Rolex Fastnet and Middle Sea Races.

Your Gateway to Bay Racing Excellence:

Modern Sailing's J/105 fleet is your ticket to the Bay's competitive racing scene. The strict one-design rules of the J/105 class mean races are won by skill, strategy, and teamwork, not by who has the biggest budget. Join the ranks of our successful Club Race Teams, like MSC Level 3 Performance Team "Chao Pescao," who have battled it out in the Rolex Big Boat Series, and our Level 2 Development Race Team, who recently secured a 2nd Place overall finish in the Winter 2024-2025 series. Our late COO, Bill Moreland, understood the J/105's allure. He experienced its responsiveness and pure sailing joy firsthand. His passion for this boat echoes the sentiments of sailors who have felt the J/105's magic. Read: COO Bill Moreland Took a Shine to J/105 Sailing - and so will you!

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

I've taken two classes at MSS&C and was very happy with the program. This is also a great club with lots of opportunities for camaraderie and practice on the water. The boats in the fleet are fantastic and kept in tip-top shape. I highly recommend for all sailors and would-be sailors!

All of the courses and my instructors (JT and Stan) were extremely professional and full of knowledge and experience. I found I was able to learn from their experiences beyond the scope of the courses, and look forward to future opportunities to do so. I would highly recommend Modern Sailing to anyone.

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.
