When you become a Modern Sailing member, you join a thriving and inclusive community of sailors to learn, practice, and enjoy sailing on San Francisco Bay with. Among your benefits as a Modern member are the many services we provide that enable you to connect and communicate with your fellow members. Member guests and non-member students are a part of the community too, and they are welcome to participate in a few of these services.
There are so many ways for our sailors to connect, that we thought it would be helpful to list them all in one place.
Crew List
The Crew List is an email distribution list internally managed by Modern Sailing. Our members use this service to find crew for upcoming charters or to offer to be crew. In many cases, crew will split charter costs or offer to co-skipper and help each other accumulate on-the-water days towards their ASA 104 prerequisite.
To join the members-only Crew List, send an email to office@modernsailing.com. That's it! A Modern Sailing team member will send an email to welcome you to the Crew List and provide you with guidance for its use.
#crewlist Slack Channel
We also have a #crewlist channel on Slack that our members use similarly to the Crew List email distribution list. To join all you have to do is email your request to office@modernsailing.com. You have the option to access Slack through a web browser or download the Slack application.
#womenssailing Slack Channel
Are you a woman sailor interested in sailing with women-only crews? Send an email to office@modernsailing.com and ask to be added to the #womenssailing Slack channel where you can connect with women sailors like you.

Facebook Crew List
Is Facebook one of the ways you connect socially? Then you might like our members-only Crew List group on Facebook! Similar to the Crew List email distribution list and Slack channel, members use the Facebook group to find crew to sail with. They also share photos of their sailing adventures in San Francisco Bay and around the world and share links to articles or other sailing-related information that members might find interesting or useful. To join, go directly to the Facebook Crew List page and click the button to request to join.
Club Sails
Our Club Sails are informal social sails skippered by experienced, friendly club members who have been trained and vetted by our instructors. There are no certifications or experience required to join a Club Sail, but only members can sign up. Everyone is encouraged to assist with sailing activities, so be sure to communicate your level of sailing experience with your skipper. You'll find that if you're eager to learn, there will be people on board eager to support you. Members are welcome to register up to 2 non-member adult guests at the member rate. Parents and guardians can register children aged 8 and up aboard Family Club Sails. With a wide variety of Club Sails on select weekdays and every weekend, there's something fun to fit every sailor's schedule!
Crew Corps
The Crew Corps is a group of Modern Sailing members who volunteer to help with crewing on Private Lessons, Custom Courses, and Private Fleet Rating Checkouts when the client (student or member) isn't able to bring crew of their own. Crew Corp volunteers support the development of their fellow members and students while enjoying cost-free time on the water. If you have a flexible schedule and can confirm in advance, the competency to crew on a variety of sailboats, and a sailors-helping-sailors attitude, you'll be a perfect fit. Sail at no cost and pay it forward in the Modern Sailing community by joining Crew Corps!
Après Sails and BBQs
Every Saturday and Sunday from 3:30 - 5:00pm, share sailing stories in the Modern Sailing lounge with your crew, fellow members, and students while you enjoy complimentary fine wine, craft beer, and snacks on us.
Club membership is not required to join an Après Sail. Member guests, students, and prospective members are all welcome to enjoy. Staff and instructors are also often seen mingling at Après Sails. This is a great opportunity to meet other sailors in our community or even pick the brain of an instructor!
We also occasionally have Member Appreciation BBQs, which have greater attendance than the Après Sails - and are a lot of fun! To find out when we have social events coming up, subscribe to our weekly newsletter (if you haven't already).
Flotillas
Our Global Destinations flotillas are a perfect opportunity for you to experience sailing in a variety of exciting territories worldwide with the support and social camaraderie of being a group. You can book a cabin aboard one of our captained sailing vessels or we can arrange a bareboat charter for you to join our flotilla. You will confidently be able to bring family or friends along with the comfort of knowing that there is support all around you. Even if you have extensive cruising experience, you will enjoy the group dynamics and social flavor of sailing in a flotilla. Membership is not required to participate.
