Develop your sailing expertise beyond chartering in the Bay. Whether you prefer focused classroom learning or a fully immersive coastal expedition, Modern Sailing offers two distinct pathways to earn your advanced ASA 105 and 106 certifications.
Option 1: Take ASA 105 and 106 Separately (the Step-by-Step Approach)
Best for sailors who want to master navigation theory before applying it at sea. (Note: You can take ASA 105 without any prerequisites, so you may already have your ASA 105 certification before you complete ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising. This is another reason to take ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising separately).
ASA 105, Coastal Navigation
Focus: Master navigation concepts like chart reading, tide calculations, and dead reckoning.
Format: A 6-evening classroom course, offering personalized attention and hands-on chart practice.
No Prerequisites: Open to all, even before ASA 101.
Cost: $560 for members, $750 for non-members.

ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising
Focus: Hands-on coastal cruising skills, including night sailing, anchoring, and advanced sail trim.
Duration: 4 days aboard our 44' Spencer 1330, Coho II, exploring Drakes Bay, the Farallon Islands, and Half Moon Bay.
Prerequisites: ASA 104 and ASA 105.
Cost: $1,850 for members, $2,365 for non-members.

Option 2: The California Coastal Combo Course
Earn both ASA 105 & 106 in one week. This 7-day immersive course blends classroom theory with real-world, hands-on coastal cruising. It is the most efficient way to gain advanced experience under the guidance of expert instructors. Great for those who can self-study the ASA 105 material before going on board for the course.
Experience: Sail the iconic California Coast, practice navigation skills and gain advanced experience under real-world conditions.
Efficiency: Earn both certifications in a single week.
Cost: $2,985 for members, $3,800 for non-members.
Prerequisite: ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising.
