ASA COURSES
  Basic Keelboat (ASA 101)
  Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)

Ready to start doing long distance cruises on the coast? Our Advanced Coastal Cruising Course (ASA 106) will give you the skills and confidence you need for success. If you've already taken Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104) then you are ready to move up to the next level.

Typically this class goes out the Golden Gate to Drakes Bay & the Farallon Islands, then down to Half Moon Bay and back. Taught onboard our Islander 53 Polaris, the curriculum includes ocean night sailing and navigation, anchoring, boat systems, developing float plans, and an introduction to electronic navigation including radar.

Boat systems and trouble shooting are also covered, with an emphasis on the problem solving skills that are essential to successful coastal cruising.

Because of dynamic conditions that present challenges to even experienced sailors, the California Coast provides the perfect setting for training students at the advanced level. After completing the Bareboat Chartering Course (ASA 104), students are welcome to join this class to further their sailing education. Students who do not have prior ASA certifications are welcome to join as long as their sailing skills meet the requirements for this class. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to discuss your sailing background in relationship to this program.

The 7-day course will be taught on our Islander 53, Polaris. We’ve sailed Polaris to the South Pacific and back twice on twelve different legs educating students at the advanced level. Polaris provides a perfect opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of highly specialized cruising equipment including a self steering vane, weather fax, single side band, GPS and more. Mechanical aspects of the boat will also be studied, thus giving students essential knowledge all cruisers must know. Qualifying students can also obtain their Coastal Navigation (ASA 105) and Advanced Coastal Cruising (ASA 106) certifications.

Day One of the trip will be spent on boat systems, weather analysis and provisioning, with the first night anchored in Richardson Bay or Horseshoe Cove. The next morning we will head out the Gate and make the trip south without stopping to Monterey, if conditions allow. Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz offer shelter and additional anchoring/docking practice on our return trip up the coast.

This program gives students hard to find ocean experience, as well as all the essentials to start coastal cruising on their own. And we always allow enough time to enjoy local seaside restaurants and towns along the way.
