Dinner & Discussion

Join John Connolly at the Golden Gate Yacht Club as he discusses the 15 most common emergencies at sea and how to respond to them: demasting, engine failure, holes in the boat, crew overboard, etc. RSVP required.

Modern Sailing School & Club has introduced thousands of sailors to this exciting sport through our Basic Keelboat class. This class will get you started with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of sailing.

Our Coast Guard-licensed instructors are knowledgeable and supportive. We are here to make sure that your experience is both safe and rewarding. All of our classes take place on 30 to 32 foot keelboats with inboard diesel engines, roller furling jibs and wheel steering (no tillers) - all factors that will help you build confidence right away.

At the basic keelboat level you'll learn sailing terminology and its applications, knots, points of sail, rules of the road, introduction to docking, and more. All your class time (4 days) is hands-on training on the boat under the guidance of a US Coast Guard-licensed instructor. Upon successful completion of the class you’ll be Basic Keelboat certified, ready to move to the next level and well on your way to chartering on your own. This class is limited to 4 students.
