West Indies Sailing Odyssey Highlights 2025

Hotel La Pagerie, Saint-Pierre, French Martinique

The Caribbean West Indies: St. Lucia and French Martinique is a sailing destination we continue to return for many reasons. The rich and fascinating history, delicious food, incredible hikes, crystal-clear waters, and warm culture make this one of our favorite destinations!

Enjoy this video to see a few of our favorite moments captured by our participants of the West Indies Flotilla April 2 - 12, 2025. This group was an exceptionally a fun crew bringing back stories we can share, and a few better left hidden in the sands for only those who were there to remember.

Nanette Fondas reminisces, "While others will likely mention snorkeling and the Pitons, my standout memory is of gazing at the volcano in Saint Pierre, and realizing that as a novice, I’d taken on the challenge of sailing for ten days and I loved the adventure! Kudos to Skipper Keith and Terry, who taught me so much."

"Another memory I have is from the passage from Martinique back to St. Lucia," Nanette recalls. "It seemed a flock of birds was making the passage with us, as they soared above Bendigo (Lagoon catamaran) and dive-bombed into the water to catch their unsuspecting prey. At one point, two different birds took over: we called them the "Top Guns" because they were larger and more assertive and they seemed like they were accompanying us to our destination." - Nanette Fondas

"What a trip! We spent 10 unforgettable days sailing around St. Lucia and Martinique with an awesome crew of old and new friends. Every day was an adventure — hiking infamous ‘Gros Piton’, jungle trails, exploring waterfalls, mud baths, rum tastings, snorkeling with colorful (and a few endangered) fish, and getting lost in cute little island towns. We dined well, we shared stories, we swam, and one day we even traded the boat for a 5 star resort pool, tropical cocktails, and killer ocean views.  Sunsets, beach bars, fresh seafood, and nonstop good vibes — it was pure West Indies magic from start to finish." - Alisa Driscoll, Modern Sailing member

"The Modern Sailing Charter was a place and time where complete strangers came together and reveled in the joy of life to the point of becoming best friends forever and eternally changing their/our lives for the better. It was friggin’ amazing!!! - Capt. Jennifer Thornton

I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

Here are some snaps of Our Saturday, August 20, 2022 Modern Sailing Expedition with Captain Robert Bivin, who was outstanding. Please convey photos and thanks to him. He is an outstanding individual, leader and sailing instructor. His knowledge and experience made us all feel safe and our Farallones Day Trip educational and just amazing.

The vessel was clean and in fine condition - very nice boat for training, well-equipped.

  • Danny Collins

The office staff was very accommodating in meeting my availability.

I would definitely recommend Modern Sailing to anyone who is interested in learning to sail the right way.
