Celebrating Our Modern Heroes: International Marine Service Technician Week at Modern Sailing

Modern Sailing Fleet Team out for a Sail

This week, April 21 to 25 marks the fourth annual International Marine Service Technician Week, a global recognition spearheaded by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) to honor the exceptional skills, dedication, and vital contributions of marine service professionals. Here at Modern Sailing School & Club, we're taking this opportunity to shine a spotlight on the incredible team that keeps our fleet running smoothly and safely – our dedicated fleet technicians.

As we gear up for the busy spring and summer boating season, including the upcoming Memorial Day weekend (Monday, May 26th), the expertise of our marine technicians is more critical than ever. They are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly up the masts and behind the engine compartments, ensuring that every vessel in our fleet is in top-notch condition, ready for your adventures on the San Francisco Bay. These technicians are incredibly skilled sailors as well. They spend countless hours docking and manuevering the vessels in close-quarters, test sailing after repairs and upgrades, and enjoy the perks sailing afterhours.

More Than Just "Fixing Things": The Expertise of a Marine Technician

Marine technicians are highly skilled professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the intricate systems that make a boat function reliably. From diagnosing complex engine issues and maintaining vital electrical systems to ensuring the integrity of plumbing, rigging, and hull structures, their knowledge base is vast and their attention to detail is paramount. They are the problem-solvers, the meticulous maintainers, and the safety advocates who ensure your time on the water is both enjoyable and secure.

Our own fleet technician crew at Modern Sailing embodies this dedication. Seven days a week, they apply their expertise to keep our diverse fleet in prime condition. Whether it's routine maintenance, tackling challenging repairs, or implementing exciting upgrades like the new stereo systems recently installed on our Catalina 320s, Kele and Phoenix, their commitment to excellence is evident in every task they undertake.

MSC Appreciation and Team Recognition

Our quartermaster, Michael, recognizing the importance of this dedicated week, has been diligently capturing the hard work of our technicians. The entire Modern Sailing management team is thrilled to join in celebrating their invaluable contributions. Throughout this week, we're showcasing their skills and dedication on our social media channels and treating them to a well-deserved in-person celebration as a token of our sincere appreciation. Members are encouraged to show appreciation when you see one of our team donning their Modern Sailing attire on the docks.

Setting the Stage for Smooth Sailing

The fleet technicians ensure your charter vessels are cleaned, fueled, pumped out, and equipped the morning of your reservation so you can enjoy sailing on the Bay. They patiently show skippers where the emergency tiller is found, how to get the engines warmed up, and keep a keen eye for anyone needing support arriving back to the slip. Some days they have to service the winches, crawl in the engine compartments, or climb up the mast. Other days they get to further enhance your charter experience, with fun projects like these recent upgrades to our Sausalito fleet. Our popular Catalina 320s, Kele and Phoenix, now feature brand new stereos equipped with Bluetooth capability and upgraded cockpit speakers. I try to get out on the water every week: out the Gate, around Angel, up Raccoon - I love it all. After 18 years as a member of OCSC in Berkeley, I learned to sail the bigger boats at Modern by taking ASA 103 and 104. My ASA 104 instructor Dave Russell was terrific. Also, Captain Bill Moreland has been very generous in giving informal advice whenever I’ve asked him. Thanks to Bill, I no longer have any anxiety about docking!

It has been wonderful sailing with MSC over the years. Please extend my thanks to the owners, management, and staff for unrequited professionalism and high standards in a charter fleet. I have sailed with several in my years and none nearly hold a candle to the quality of business and staff at Modern Sailing.

The Full Moon Sail with Skipper Bob Gutsgell was Ah-Mayzing!! The group dynamic was lovely and the views spectacular. I can't say enough good things about the experience. Thanks so much for the wonderful Club Sails, they are really great.

Captain Jeff Cathers is really cool. I had such a great time on the Farallones Day Trip. It was actually my very best day of 2020. Thank you so much for coordinating the trip.

The meeting room was quite adequate and the location most convenient, but the course outline and instruction were outstanding. Modern Sailing is fortunate to have such a well organized instructor in Mr. Stan Lander who teaches very well from a rich professional background. Mr. Lander was generous with his time and patiently in helping students who needed more attention or time in understanding various aspects of the curriculum.
